This seemingly supernatural optical phenomenon is rare. One must be at the right location at the right time with the right conditions to produce this atmospheric optical effects. The mountaineers were a lucky bunch to be present on the exact spot at the right moment when the crater center has the perfect combination (clouds/fog, right angle of the sun rays and the position of the observer) for this nature spectacle to happen.
Known as a fog bow or white rainbow ( the outer white rim), solar glory (the inner band of colored rings) and a Brocken Spectre (the shadowy apparition in the middle), this 3-1 nature marvel is probably the first of its kind to be photographed right in the middle of a gaping mouth of an active volcano.
